Portal Sandbox Laser Pistol: Controls and Practice
Laser Pistol
- Pistol key: Press X for Laser Pistol. T is Portal Gun, a different tool.
- Keep recovery separate: E selects Regenerate. Remember the action before combat becomes hectic.
The Portal Sandbox Laser Pistol uses X on keyboard. Keep it separate from T, which selects the Portal Gun. Start pistol practice by choosing the intended equipment, then give that one tool your attention rather than switching between travel, Knife and recovery every few moments.
Choose the pistol rather than the travel gun
Use X when the Laser Pistol is the action you want. A gun-shaped item is not enough to identify the selected tool: the Portal Gun belongs to T. If you meant to explore and reached for X, correct the selection. If you meant to practise the pistol and reached for T, make the opposite correction.
This distinction matters when an encounter interrupts freeroam. Decide whether you are continuing to travel or changing the session into combat practice. The Portal Gun guide serves the travel question. Keep the pistol attempt about its own equipment choice so a portal input does not become part of an unclear attack sequence.
Give the pistol one focused attempt
Find a moment where you can follow the selected equipment and the scene. Make the pistol the tool for that attempt instead of changing repeatedly after each setback. A calm practice opportunity is useful because it lets you distinguish choosing the wrong action from needing more practice with the one you intended.
If a friend is helping, agree on the activity and let each other have enough time to select the intended tool. The useful goal is a deliberate pistol attempt, not a promised number of eliminations. Keep movement and camera changes manageable rather than trying to learn every part of the toolkit during the same crowded encounter.
Plan the recovery choice
Remember E for Regenerate before the attempt starts. Recovery has a separate input from both the pistol and the Knife. If you keep selecting a weapon while intending to recover, fix that control confusion first. The regeneration reference gives that choice its own explanation.
Do not build pistol practice around an assumed shield, invulnerability period or automatic recovery effect. A clear recovery choice can be part of your plan without becoming a guarantee about the outcome of another player’s attack. If E appears unresponsive, use the recovery troubleshooting page rather than changing pistol selection or assuming the weapon is the source of the problem.
Choose whether to keep practising or change tools
Stay with the Laser Pistol if that is the action you want to learn. Change to the Knife when you actually want to work on its swipe, not because one confusing exchange supposedly proves a universal weapon ranking. The Knife guide handles that separate action, and the comparison page puts both inside an explicit first-session learning order.
After a practice attempt, name one useful change for the next one: select X deliberately, keep a readable view, or remember the separate recovery action. If the pistol repeatedly produces no response while other controls work, describe that exact symptom through the beta issue routine. A specific equipment or input problem is easier to explain than a general claim that combat is broken.
