Portal Sandbox Controls: Keyboard Action Reference

Last updated 2026-10-25Unofficial player article

Controls

  • Main keys: T: Portal Gun. Q: Knife. E: Regenerate. F: Blender Dimension. X: Laser Pistol.
  • Timing condition: Use F before entering a portal when choosing Blender Dimension.

Portal Sandbox controls assign five different jobs to T, Q, E, F and X. Use the table as an action lookup, then read the condition for Blender Dimension. Knowing a key and knowing when to use it are separate parts of controlling the game.

The five keyboard bindings

Choose the action name first, then use its key. T is Portal Gun, while X is Laser Pistol; both have gun names, so confusing them can make an otherwise correct button press feel broken. Q belongs to the Knife, and E belongs to regeneration. F has the special portal-entry condition described below.

Keep this reference open beside the game if you are still learning the layout. You do not need to memorize the table in the order it appears. Start with the action you came to use and its closest source of confusion. For example, a player learning travel should make T distinct from X before adding a combat sequence.

F belongs before portal entry

For Blender Dimension, press F before entering a portal. Pressing it after crossing does not follow the listed entry instruction. That is why the action table alone is not the whole answer: Blender has an order attached to it, while T simply identifies the Portal Gun action.

Rehearse that order away from a hectic encounter. Decide that you want Blender, make the F input, then enter. The Blender Dimension guide expands this specific sequence. It does not replace the ordinary Portal Gun reference, and you should not treat F as a universal fix whenever any kind of travel behaves unexpectedly.

Separate a missed input from the wrong action

If the wrong tool appears, return to the key mapping before assuming the game has failed. Q and E are close together on a keyboard but serve very different purposes. Similarly, a visible pistol is not necessarily the Portal Gun you meant to select. Match the result to the action you requested.

If nothing happens, first make sure your typing focus is back in the game rather than in a chat box or another window. Close an obstructing menu and try the intended input once. This is ordinary input troubleshooting, not a special hidden game requirement. For a persistent travel problem, use Portal Gun troubleshooting; for recovery, use regeneration troubleshooting.

Use the reference for the device in your hands

These letters are the keyboard reference. They should not be presented as a complete map of touch buttons or a controller layout. On a phone, use the game’s visible action controls and the mobile controls guide to keep movement, camera attention and action choice manageable.

Once you can select the intended action consistently, stop changing inputs and work on one player decision. Practise choosing the Knife for its swipe, the pistol for pistol practice, or regeneration for a recovery attempt. A compact control reference is most useful when it removes uncertainty about the button and lets the next guide explain what you want to accomplish with that action.
